Richard Prince (b.1949) is an American painter and photographer, best known as a pioneer of Appropriation Art. This style, initiated in the late 1970s, helped spawn the appropriation craze that became popularized in the American art market in subsequent years. Prince worked with a variety of media, including photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture, and throughout his diverse body of work, a consistent and relentless occurrence is the replication of found images. References to sex, drugs, and rock-and-roll tend to give Prince’s works an edge, while the concept of appropriation calls into question the definitions of art, originality, and the role of the artist as creator. Prince’s works have been exhibited in over four hundred group and solo exhibitions worldwide, including recent group exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, IL (2012); the Museum of Modern Art, New York, NY (2012); and the Whitney Museum of American Art (2011).
