Lot description
Created by Richard Howard Hunt, this early, unique welded steel sculpture exemplifies the artist’s love for dynamic abstraction as seen in this untitled steel sculpture. Resembling some fantastical insect from the imagination, long tendrils of steel are hand-welded to the sculpture’s body, complete with wing and antennae-like forms. The gold numbers under the base were not place there by the artist, but where in fact from the manufacturer where the steel originated.

The artist's studio has acknowledged the work, dating it to be between 1956-1966.

Known for his sculpted works of natural and abstracted forms, Chicago-based African American artist Richard Howard Hunt (B. 1935) is known for his lyrical style and the use of a variety of materials in both his large and small scale pieces. Incredibly diverse in his approach to not only sculpture, but lithography and drawing as well, Hunt has become one of the most prolific American artists alive today. In addition to being the first African American to be accorded a retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art and was also appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to serve on the National Endowment for the Arts governing board. Hunt has produced more than fifty-five publicly commissioned sculptures and has received numerous awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Sculpture Center, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and over eight honorary degrees.
