Richard Hamilton (1922-2011) is a well known British painter and collage artist who is credited for some of the earliest contributions to the Pop Art movement. Hamilton use contemporary iconography as a starting point for an exploration of the functioning and values of art. During the 1970s, many institutions held retrospectives of his work including those in New York (1973), Berlin (1974), London (1975 and 1993) and Amsterdam (1976). In 1994 he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. In 2010, in London, an important exhibition was held at the Serpentine Gallery, where his most famous artworks were exhibited alongside some pieces demonstrating his political involvement. Hamilton died at age 89 in September 2011. He had been working on a major retrospective of his work to travel to four cities in Europe and the United States in 2013-2014.
