Lot description
Print size: 8 1/8 x 5 1/8 inches (20.7 x 13 cm)
Framed size: 16 x 13 inches (40.6 x 33 cm)

Special framed screenprint on masonite by legendary Op Artist Richard Anuszkiewicz. The work offered here is signed in pencil by Anuszkiewicz and dated 8/9/1982. It has superb provenance: as it is also personally dedicated to Tracy Atkinson, who was the director of the famed Wadsworth Atheneum Museum, Hartford, CT between 1977 and 1987. The Museum has an Anuszkiewicz work in its permanent collection.

Anuszkiewicz created a number of these small silkscreens on masonite in the early 1970s and gave them as gifts to individuals who were influential in his career. A similar work recently sold at auction from the Harry Abrams Estate. Each silkscreen is uniquely signed and dedicated by the artist.

The work measures 8 1/8 by 5 1/8 inches and is framed in the original 1980s wooden frame with elegant matting and triple beveled edges. Framed, it measures 16 inches by 13 inches.

Richard Anuszkiewicz (b. 1930) is known as the founder of the Op Art movement in the United States. Now in his mid eighties, Anuszkiewicz is experiencing a resurgence in critical acclaim and popularity, as reflected in the auction prices his works command at major auction houses. He was awarded the Lorenzo the Magnificent Award at the Florence Biennale and his work can be found in the permanent collections of major museums worldwide.

Also known as a pioneering colorist in American art, Anuszkiewicz’s unique chemistry of complementary hues employed in wave-like repetitions of line and geometry show the influence of Josef Albers in their optical abstractions as well as the perception and psychology of color.
