This lithograph is from the portfolio "Les Enfants Trouves." The works in the portfolio are based on Magritte's largest mural installation at the Casino Communal de Knokke, which he completed in June of 1953. The print portfolio was published in 1968.

René Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967) was best known for his surreal depictions of regular, everyday forms, people and objects, which he juxtaposed, creating create odd and quirky compositions. He gave his paintings a thought-provoking appeal that prompted viewers to reexamine their own perceptions of reality. Magritte achieved some level of fame, as he was commonly associated with popular French Surrealists, but he achieved worldwide recognition in 1948 when he signed a new contract with a well-known New York art dealer named Alexander Iolas. A real interest in his work was sparked in the 1960s, but Magritte unfortunately passed away of pancreatic cancer in 1967 during the height of his popularity. His work is continues to be highly revered, and is held in major collections at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others.
