Associated with the social realists, and a contemporary other first generation post-colonial Indian artists, Ram Kumar is renown for his abstracted blocked landscapes with angular structures dissolving into the ground, a metaphor for the passage of life to an unknown realm of existence. Here in his later more vibrantly colored series, he merges natural landscape painting with his incongruous, buildings with more frenetic, lively compositions. Kumar paints not just one scene, but a combination of fragmented memories of his many visits to the cities along the rivers in India, and transforms the landscape into a system of lines, planes and blocks with textured surfaces. He paints not objects or places, but the relationship between dream, memory, and reality.

Kumar studied under Fernand Leger and Andre Lhote and looked to the early Modernism of Paris, and London for inspiration, though his works are deeply rooted in Indian aesthetics and culture. His recent retrospective was held at the Aicon Gallery London in 2011, and he has exhibited in New York, California, and throughout Europe and Asia. The artist currently lives and works in New Delhi.
