Lot description
Known for his thickly painted works of abstraction, this untitled oil on canvas piece by Piero Sadun exemplifies the artist’s love for rhythmic layered textures and energy infused brushstrokes. Dashed across the canvas, each dab of paint brings a visually dynamic element to the composition, with colors subtly contrasting from each other to quietly vie for the eye’s attention. Every stroke is expressively executed, adding depth to the surface while building up complex layers of paint so often seen in the artist’s work.

Italian artist Piero Sadun (1919-1974) had little formal training as an artist, but excelled in the world of abstraction in an array of mediums including oil, charcoal, and mixed media. Though he discovered painting at a young age, Fascist anti-Semitic laws prevented Sadun from attending school and completing his apprenticeship, forcing him to earn his diploma externally. Debuting in a collective show with Stradone and Scialoja in 1945 after moving to Rome solidified his movement into the art world. Sadun was greatly inspired by Scipione, Soutine, Morandi, and Van Gogh, lending to his application of dense materials and looser brushtrokes. His work turned more abstract after the 1960s, combining the energy of Abstract Expressionism with carefully composed color arrangements to create visually captivating work. The artist’s work has been shown at such venues as the 1950 and 1960 Venice Biennale, Galeria dello Zodiaco (Rome, Italy), and most recently in 2005 Galleria Edieuropa (Rome, Italy).
