In Mirror for Observers I-III, Peter Phillips applies the aesthetic and bright palette of product marketing to images of predatory birds, machine parts, and geometric diagrams. A surreal juxtaposition of elements—at once accessible and abstract—this masterpiece of British Pop Art is reminiscent of Phillips' well-known series of works, Random Illusions, executed between the 1960s and 1970s.
Peter Phillips was a pioneer of the British Pop Art movement. He met David Hockney, Allen Jones and Kitaj while studying at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1964 he moved to New York, upon being awarded the Harkness Fellowship, and exhibited alongside Warhol and Lichtenstein. Phillips’ work is exhibited in major museums world-wide.
