Lot description
Phillips, Peter
Corner Play, 1977
Oil on Canvas
175.5 x 90 cm

Created from oil and collage on canvas, 'Corner Play' was painted in 1977 by artist Peter Phillips. Combining a seemingly random assortment of collaged and painted items including a watercolor set, a pair of children's scissors, a picture of a kitten, and 'Greetings' in the lower left, this work by Phillips is an amalgamation of pop imagery hinting at a childhood montage and accentuated by shades of blue and purple.

British artist Peter Phillips is one of the pioneers of the British Pop Art movement. He met David Hockney, Allen Jones and Kitaj when studying at the Royal College of Art. In 1964, he moved to New York when he was awarded the Harkness Fellowship and there, he exhibited alongside Warhol and Lichtenstein. His artworks reflect his interest for the American culture, using everyday iconography mixed with a dynamic montage style inspired by advertisement. Peter Phillips’s art has been on show in many major museums around the world.
