"Bottles & Jars No. 7" is a seminal example of the artist's abstracted still-life oil paintings and is a thoughtful work where all compositional elements have been analyzed, this includes color as well as natural and reflected light. Schwartz breaks down the literal objects in her works into marks and patterns based on light and shadows. Here, definite strokes of greens, yellows, oranges and whites are luminous and ethereal. Schwartz intentionally flattens and compresses space here by blurring edges and ground lines. Her treatment of light and color further enhances the scene, transforming the traditional still-life into a work that is completely modern and utterly sublime. Schwartz received her formal education in painting with an MFA from Queens College in 1975 and a BFA from Boston University, in 1973.
