Lot description
Executed in 1995, ‘Walkway’ is an oil on linen by Paul Winstanley which exemplifies his characteristic approach to capturing interiors based off previously photographed spaces. A long hallway covered in graffiti plays with light contrasts as the eye travels along its length, starting with a brightened foreground, transitioning into a darkened midway, and ending in a bright white square of light of the unknown in the background. Manipulating the viewer’s perception with an aesthetic play of forms, Winstanley continues to create engaging works which captures the mind’s attention with visual arresting imagery.

Contemporary British artist Paul Winstanley (b. 1954) is known for his photography-based paintings which explore landscapes and interiors devoid of any human presence. Playing with saturation, never-ending vistas, and light/dark contrasts, his work creates an emotional and psychological tension which create a sense of collective memory of the unexpectedly familiar. The artist received his BA from the Cardiff College of Art and his higher degree from the Slade School of Fine Art. Winstanley has exhibited extensively at such venues as the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles, CA), Artspace (Auckland, NZ), Today Art Museum (Beijing, CN), and the Royal Academy (London, UK), among others.
