Typical of Paul McCarthy’s work, ‘Australian Fucker’ bridges the gap between high and low culture by presenting an erotic theme through playful caricatures. Meant to both charm and confuse, McCarthy’s innocent portrayal of animals and humans adds a sense of naivety that challenges the composition’s narrative.
This work comes framed and measures 22 x 16 inches.
Through shock and wit, Los Angeles based artist Paul McCarthy (b.1945) explores popular contemporary themes in his multi media works that blur the line between high and low culture. Cultural myths and icons are addressed through crude, erotic, and sarcastic representations that question our basic perspectives. McCarthy attended the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT before completing his BFA in painting in 1969 at San Francisco Art Institute, San Francisco, CA. He then went on to earn his MFA at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA in 1973. Represented by Hauser & Wirth in New York, London, and Zurich, McCarthy has been widely exhibited throughout the world, with recent solo shows at Kukje Gallery, Seoul, South Korea (2012); KÖR Kunst im öffentlichen Raum, Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna, Austria (2011); Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, CA (2011); Charles Riva Collection, Bruxelles, Belgium (2011); Zacheta National Gallery of Art, Warsaw, Poland (2009); and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2008).
