Lot description

Paper Size: 30 x 51"
Pat Steir's exemplary use of color and abstraction are perfectly captured in "Long Horizontal." Earth tones of yellow and brown come together as Steir brilliantly creates a sense of movement and light, placing the viewer in what feels like an eerie forest scene, with rays of light shining through dense and barren trees. A perfect example of the dynamic conceptual work Pat Steir is known for, which combines elements from reality and fantasy to render sumptuous abstract compositions.
Pat Steir (b. 1940) received her BFA from Pratt Institute, New York, NY in 1962. Since her first museum exhibition in 1973 at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC, Steir has gone on to exhibit her work at the de Young Museum, San Francisco, CA (2010), the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (2010) and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY (2011), among others.
