This iconic photograph by Chinese Contemporary mixed media artist and photographer Pan Yue (China, B. 1968) unabashedly appropriates the 'scandalous' imagery of a famous this 16th century (c. 1594) oil portrait that now hangs in the Louvre Museum, France. The painting by an unknown artist, "Gabrielle d'Estrées et une de ses sœurs" depicts the King's most beloved mistress, with whom he had two legitimate children, sitting nude in a bath with one of her sisters, holding what is believed to be Henry's coronation ring. Her sister, also nude sits beside her, reaching out to gingerly pinch Gabrielle's right nipple as both women gaze solemnly outwards.
Pen Yue's version stays compositionally true to the original,, but replaces the two French sisters with highly made-up, nude Chinese actresses, a common thread of his work, with their faces powdered white, elaborate wigs with long black curled tresses and wearing dramatic and dark makeup. Pan Yue has replicated many of the famous western, Old Master Paintings in this manner and in an ongoing series where he explores gender roles as well as the relationship of Western and Eastern art, culture, tradition and history. This work is a stunning conflation of East and West and is one of Pan's most important images, as it has never come to the secondary market prior to this edition.
