Lot description
"After a Day's Work”, (2009) is a major legendary Chinese artist Pan Dehai and exemplifies the artist’s iconic subject matter and figurative style. This oil painting depicts a dynamic array of colorful figures crossing a bride commuting home after a day's work, mostly walking, some on bicycles or in cars with a rainbow colored, yet smogged-filled city at their backs. The exaggerated, chubby, cartoonish figures are the immediately recognizable creation of Pan Dehai, who intentionally makes all his figures appear identical at first glance, representing the anonymous collective, yet upon closer look the specific dress, demeanor and individuality of Pan's rotund commuters becomes apparent. This painting belongs to the artists highly collectible "Urban" series of paintings, measures 47.25 x 59.05 inches (120 x 150 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Born in Si Ping City, China, contemporary artist Pan Dehai (B. 1956) is known for his cherubic figures which allude to the gluttonous aspects of modern society. He speaks to the literal obesity among individuals, but also to the aggressive and possessive greed harbored by governments in the modern era. Pan Dehai has exhibited extensively throughout the world with shows held at Guangdong Art Museum (Guangdong, CN), Melbourne Art Museum (Melbourne, AU), and the Contemporary Art Gallery (London, UK), among numerous others.
