Nobuyoshi Araki, born in 1940 in Tokyo, is known as Japan’s greatest contemporary photographer. He is considered one of the most prolific artists dead or alive in Japan and around the world, publishing over 350 books of photography. His photographs are often erotic, and sometimes called pornographic. He is best known for his photography books entitled Sentimental Journey, Tokyo Lucky Holy and Shino. He also photographed Bjork for the cover of her 1997 album Telegram. Araki has also contributed to the Sunrise anime series called Brain Powered. The Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art held a retrospective of his photographs in 1999. The MoT chief curator Junichi Shioda eloquently described Araki’s oeuvre stating: “Araki’s photographs are like a mirror, reflecting the reality in which we live…[this reality] includes Tokyo, a city of obscene energy and inhuman emptiness; the noisy clamor of the entertainment districts, the casual circumstances of everyday life; sensual nude women; straight-arrow businessmen; love and sex; the sky and flowers; life and death." Araki’s work is held in numerous museum collection internationally including the Tate in London, England and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California.
