Lot description

"Schoolgirls" is one of the most exciting oil paintings by famed Vietnamese artist, Nguyen Thanh Binh to come to market. This painting is a rare, dynamic work from his oeuvre, as here three beautiful Vietnamese young women are shown walking together wearing brilliant full-length red tunics, a color the artist typically uses very sparingly. This ample use of red adds a sense of movement and stands in vivid contrast to the brilliant white of the women's wide-brimmed hats and billowing pants, their long black hair blowing in the breeze and the monochromatic taupe background. "Schoolgirls" is a brilliant example of the artist's ability to make figures out of any real context the visual the focus, with the negative space that surrounds these three women used to redirect attention towards them, as well as add harmony and tranquility to the overall composition.

Nguyen Thanh Binh (Vietnam, b. 1954) is famous for his paintings of individuals from his native Vietnam that capture a specific emotional moment in time, either experienced alone or in groups. His inherent stylistic theme is to present the figures usually dressed in whites and soft colors against simple backgrounds, creating compositions that are peaceful, thoughtful, sophisticated and harmonious. His paintings of women and young children usually painted in a monochrome palette of whites and taupe, are his most sought-after internationally. Nguyen Thanh Binh is one of the most well-known Vietnamese painters working today and has exhibited in Museums and Galleries internationally.
