Lot description
This work is unframed and in excellent condition.
From the artist's statement about this series: "Every year, for nearly 1,400 years, Iranians commemorate the violent death of their most loved saint, Imam Hussein. While the traditional stages of remembering his death in 680 AD are generally the same all [throughout] the country, there are local differences. Some dress up their children as angels in his name, while others cover their heads in mud.

I traveled across the country, visiting Sedeh (near Isfahan), Khorramabad (Lorestan), and Bijaar (Kurdistan) to photograph the way they mourn.

[In this photograph...] A boy in Sedeh, near Isfahan, dressed up as an angel, where people traditionally dress up their children as the ‘angels of Imam Hussein’. By doing so they are thanking Imam Hussein for a wish they had made the year before and which has come true.”-Newsha Tavakolian
