Natalia Sergeevna Goncharova (1881-1962) was a Russian avant-garde painter, writer, illustrator, costume and set designer. Although she is best known for her Cubo-Futurists works, Goncharova also experimented with Rayonism and Neo-primitivism inspired by Russian folk art. In 1911, she and her husband Mikhail Larionov developed Rayonism, a style of abstract art. While the group's existence was short-lived, they made numerous notable contributions to pre-Revolution art in Russia, including their Donkey's Tail exhibition in 1912 and their contributions to the Der Blaue Reiter group, with whom they exhibited their works in Munich the same year. Though the group had only one exhibition, it included such Modern art giants including Kazimir Malevich, Alexander Shevchenko, and Marc Chagall, who were all influenced by the Cubo-Futurist and Fauvist movements. Goncharova solidified her presence in the avant-garde art scene in 1913 with a widely acclaimed solo exhibition of her works that featured more than 700 paintings by the artist.

Goncharova exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1921, and also regularly participated in the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants.
