In 1970-76, Nancy Rexroth produced a body of images called Iowa, a meditation on her childhood in the Midwest. The photographs were taken in Iowa, but also and more extensively in Ohio. The sense of place as dreamed, as remembered. The images are blurred and oblique as of a scene seen in the background of a picture. The shadowy, evanescent world of bygone youth, of a kind of paradise lost, is imbued with the melancholy of age and experience. The poignancy of this evocation of the past is almost palpable. And the images, as here of boys suspended in the air in the midst of their play, are fraught, resonant, compelling.

Nancy Rexroth was born in 1946. Her work is included in numerous collections including the Museum of Modern Art, New York City; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; De Cordova Museum, Lincoln, Massachusetts; and the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris. A monograph entitled Nancy Rexroth: Iowa was published in 1977 by Violet Press.
