Lot description

"Aurelium" has fine provenance as it was de-accessioned from the Santa Monica Museum of art, and bears their unique inventory number on the verso of the frame.

This gorgeous uncommon, hand signed, numbered, dated and framed etching, aquatint and drypoint in colors on Fabriano Artistico paper is by Nancy Graves (1938-1995), an accomplished and inventive sculptor and printmaker who was once married to Richard Serra but sadly died of breast cancer at the young age of only 58. This beautiful work on paper was printed in five runs from fivc copper plates.

At the center of the composition, Graves depicted her 1978 bronze sculpture Aurignac (Carmean, Jr. et. al., 1987, p.65) which is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Museum.

This dramatic piece is elegantly framed in the Santa Monica Museum's original wooden frame. It is ready to hand. It is pencil signed, numbered and dated by the artist, and also bears the publisher's distinctive chop mark.

Aurellium is fully referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Ms. Graves' printed works, "Nancy Graves: Excavations in Print" by Thomas Padon. (plate 63).

For fans of Nancy Graves printmaking as well as her sculpture, this dazzling rare work on paper which depicts one of her most celebrated sculptures, is a rare find. Other editions of this uncommon print have also been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and Associated American Artists.
