Lot description
"Making Things Right" (2007) is a dynamic print in colors by Japanese "Superflat" Contemporary artist "Mr." (Japan, b. 1969). This important figurative print is loose as issued, from an edition of 300, measures 23.70 x 35.50 inches (60 x 90 cm) and is in perfect condition. Mr. is world-renowned for his works in a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, and video, all closely related in aesthetics, style, and theme. Mr.'s pieces tend to depict young boys and girls in an "anime/manga" style, as seen here. While cute and innocent on the surface, many of his works are also quite sexualized, leaving it an open question as to how innocent his works are in the end.

Mr. takes his pseudonym from former Yomiuri Giants baseball player Shigeo Nagashima, who was frequently referred to as "Mr. Giants". The artist was discovered in 1995 by Murakami and graduated from Sokei Art School in 1996. Mr.'s participation in Murakami's "Super Flat" exhibition in 2000 played a major role in earning him international recognition. Mr. has since exhibited internationally in both group and solo exhibitions including the acclaimed 2005 exhibition "Little Boy: The Arts of Japan’s Exploding Subculture", Japan Society, New York; "RED HOT: Asian Art Today from the Chaney Family Collection", Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Texas (2007); "KRAZY! The Delerious World of Anime + Comics + Video Games + Art", Vancouver Art Gallery, Canada (2008); "Animate", Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Fukuoka, Japan (2009); "Exhibition Kyoto-Tokyo: From Samurais to Mangas", Grimaldi Forum (2010); Leeahn Gallery, Seoul, Korea (2010). Mr.'s work is represented in numerous public and private collections worldwide. The artist lives and works in Saitama, just outside of Tokyo, Japan and is represented by Lehmann Maupin Gallery and Galerie Perrotin, amongst others.
