Lot description

Mira Schendel is a highly acclaimed and internationally recognized Modern Latin American artist who creates subtle, sophisticated abstractions in muted hues and simplified shapes. Her existential minimal paintings utilize a silent language of balance and composition, replete with knotted paper and multiple layers of paint. This work measures 21 x 26 inches (53.3 x 66 cm), comes unframed and is in excellent condition.

Swiss born Mira Schendel (1919-1988) emigrated to Brazil soon after WWII where she began her art career in ceramics and painting. She received her formal education from the Art School of Milan, Italy in 1936 and exhibited in major galleries and museums internationally, including the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Pheonix Art Museum, the Museum Ludwig, Germany, and MoMA, New York, among multiple others. Mira has been included in the Venice Biennial as well as the Sao Paulo International Bienal. Her works are included in the permanent collections of the MoMa in New York, the Tate in London, MNCARS and Daros Latinamerica, among several others.
