One of the most famous Chinese Contemporary photographers working today, artist Miao Xiaochun is most famous for his "Last Judgement in Cyber Space" series of digitally created photographs. This lot includes two photographs by Miao--a 'front' (F4) and a rear (R3) image. In this major body of work Miao appropriates Michelangelo’s famous fresco on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and uses this masterpiece as fuel for provocation. Miao created his black and white, silvery and futuristic images on a computer, painstakingly recreating each of Michelangelo's 400 figures with his own versions and placing his robotic, bald-headed nude men in the exact corresponding poses and compositions to the original painting. Miao's three dimensional computer version of The Last Judgement allows him to create ‘photographs’ of the Scene from imaginary vantage points, hence here the offering of one of his frontal photographs with a posterior, 'rear' photograph of The Last Judgement. Miao's brilliant and singular conflation of the sublime aspects of religious paintings with a subversive science fiction theme, Miao uses photography to engage the viewer in an ultra-modern and singular manner.

Miao was born in China in 1964. His photographs are in top collections world-wide, and have been the subject of countless exhibitions. His solo show "Miao Xiaochun: The Last Judgement In Cyberspace", travelled to White Space Beijing; Walsh Gallery, Chicago, USA and Alexander Ochs Galleries Berlin. Germany. Museum shows include as well as exhibitions at elite galleries in Asia and Europe including Gallery Urs Meile, Lucerne, Switzerland. Solo Museum exhibitions have been held at the Museum of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing, China; Kulturbegegnungen, Gallery Stellwerk, Kassel, Germany; Shanghai Art Museum, China; National Museum of Chinese History, Beijing, China; Beijing Art Museum, Beijing, China; Zhu Qizhan Art Museum, Shanghai, China amongst many others.
