Lot description
“Every Room is Illuminated No. 7” (2006-07) is a stunning, softly sensual color photograph printed on rice paper by famed Contemporary artist Meng Jin's (China b. 1973) iconic "Every Room" Series that spotlights the re-contextualized PRC star applique found on uniforms and military caps. an icon that is visually and culturally connected to the harsh programs of Chairman Mao and his failed "Cultural Revolution". Here this star is illuminated as if a chandelier or even a jelly-fish, in soft pinks that oscillate and glow, appearing to floating up above. To create this surreal work, Jin employs an exciting double-layered negative technique for each image with various levels of focus and digital manipulation to perfect a ghost-like afterimage effect. This work comes from an edition of 6 measures 31.50 x 47.20 inches and is professionally framed to larger dimensions of 44.50 x 55 inches. This work also comes with a formal certificate of authenticity from the artist, and is in excellent condition.

The artist grew up in the aftermath of the China’s Cultural revolution, and creates images that address the fading past and hopeful future. Each are taken from various important rooms of places like the People’s Parliament House in Beijing. Jin’s images portray the brilliance and spectacle of the past era, the light and empty spaces symbolizing a reflected hope for China’s future from its dynamic and beautiful past. In this series, the physical room is merely hinted at, and the abstraction of the illuminated ceiling decorations leave the viewer to his own perceptions of the memory of the vanishing mystery.

Meng Jin was born in Chongqing China and received her bachelor of Arts from Southwest China Normal University, Chongqing, China and her Masters of Fine Arts with distinction from Chelsea College of University of Arts in London, UK. She has held several solo exhibitions in Shanghai, Beijing, Beijing, and the US, as well as important group exhibitions in museums like MOMA PSI in New York, V& A museum in London, The Pacific Heritage Museum in San Francisco, US, the Shanghai Art Museum, in China, and the Guangdong Art Museum among several others. Her works have been included in multiple art fairs and festivals throughout the world, and in many important galleries like the Kiang Gallery and the 798 Project Space in Beijing, China. The artist currently lives and works in Beijing.
