Lot description
This vivid oil on canvas work belongs to Mel Smothers's “Andy Dialogs,” an ongoing series of paintings in which the artist responds to the work and legacy of Andy Warhol (American, 1928-1987). Smothers began the series in 2006, after reading in the New York Times that Warhol's estate in Montauk, NY had been sold; Smothers visited Montauk and, struck by the contrast between the locale and Warhol's art and public persona, began a series of works as a kind of personal dialogue with the deceased Pop artist. "Andy Dialog #252" measures 42 x 54 inches (106.7 x 137.2 cm).

Mel Smothers (American) is a contemporary Pop painter best known for his "Andy Dialogs" series of paintings. Smothers studied art at California State University, the University of California Davis, and the University of Idaho. During his time in California, he was taught by artist Wayne Thiebaud (American, b. 1920). Smothers moved from California to New York in 2005. Recently, his work was featured in a solo exhibition at the Judaica Museum (2009) and a group show at the Cooper Union (2007) in New York. He has also participated in several public arts projects. Works from the "Andy Dialogs" are currently on view at The Grey Dog and Studio 26 in New York. Smothers's work is represented in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, New York's Judaica Museum, and the Higginbotham House Museum. He lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
