Lot description
Maurice de Vlaminck (1876 – 1958) is considered one of the most important artists in the Fauve movement of the early twentieth century. Having had no formal training his work was unhindered by conventions and standards of traditional and academic art. He became well known for his uninhibited use of color. Though a vital movement in the history of modern art, Fauvism was short-lived, and Vlaminck’s use of color became increasingly subdued as early as 1908.

Vlaminck became interested in the graphic arts during the latter half of his career. His subject matter remained focused on nature and began experimenting with woodcuts and engraving, and later with watercolor.
