Lot description
Vibrant shades of green dominate this remarkable painting by Mary Heilmann. Executed in 1992, "Untitled" is a meditative work featuring Heilmann's signature gridded rectangular pattern and lively, painterly gestures. Here, the relationship between the bold, dark winding line plays out across the flat gridded picture plane.

American artist Mary Heilmann (b. 1940) began her career as a sculptor and began painting in the 1970s. She has a keen sense of color, and expertly layers paint on canvas to build up thickness and intensity of hue. Known for creating abstract works which combine separate geometric shapes and colors, Heilmann's overall body of work has been highly influential to a younger generation of contemporary artists. Her work was included in the 1972, 1989, and 2008 Biennials at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her first solo exhibition and retrospective was from 2008-2009 at the New Museum of Contemporary Art titled, “To Be Someone.” The artist lives and works in New York, and is represented internationally by 303 Gallery (New York) and Hauser and Wirth (Zurich, London, and New York).
