Lot description
This work depicts the small island of Shōdoshima, known for its olive production and hot springs and located in the Inland Sea of Japan. Lewis was deeply interested in the art and culture of Japan and traveled there in 1920, staying for eighteen months. His time there marked a shift in his artistic career, which until that point had been focused in printmaking. While he was there, Lewis spent the majority of his time painting in oil and in watercolor, triggering a five year hiatus from printmaking. When he returned to prints, his subject matter was still heavily focused on Japan, but it was not long before he went back to creating the etchings of New York City for which is he known today.

Martin Lewis (1881-1962) was born in Australia and came to the United States at the turn of the century. His ability to render form, texture, and light, both with and without color, is unrivaled and apparent in all of his works.

This work is unframed. It was framed previously but needed to be removed to reveal the signature and title of work. When the frame was removed, the back and bottom two corners of the canvas had to be pulled back from the stretcher wood to which the canvas was stapled.
