Lot description
Marilyn Minter (B. 1948, Shreveport, LA) is a contemporary American artist who is known for her photography, painting, and videos. Her work is visually luscious in colors and subject matter, exploring themes of beauty in glamorous and grotesque ways. Her photographs are often made into full scale paintings, with a photo-realist approach that is both perverse and sexy at the same time, creating a composition of sensuality and hyperrealism. Minter earned her B.F.A. from the University of Florida, Gainesvile, FL in 1970 and her M.F.A. in Painting from Syracuse University, NY in 1972. She has been honored with numerous grants and endowments, including the 1989 Artist´s Fellowship Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1998. She was also the 2006 Tiffany Award recipient. Her work has recently been the subject of solo shows at Salon 94 Bowery, New York, NY (2011); Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany (2011); Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Cleveland, OH (2010); Regen Projects, Los Angeles, CA (2009); Andréhn-Schiptjenko, Stockholm, Sweden (2008); and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco, CA (2005). Her work is held in the public collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA.
