A Merry Christmas (Holiday Card), 1925

Linocut
7 х 5 in. cm.
Signed, lower right on recto "Marguerite Zorach," lower left title "A Merry Christmas"
Lot description
Zorach was heavily influenced by Cubist techniques she witnessed at the Armory Show (The International Exhibition of Modern Art) in 1913, which is seen throughout her oeuvre of work. As with this holiday Christmas card, Zorach fractures the figure’s outline and skews her form, while adding stylistic design elements to the edges of the composition. The dynamic play between negative and printed spaces, creates an exquisite tonality in the depicted figure, allowing her to pop from the flattened picture plane.

Marguerite Zorach (B. 1887 Santa Rosa, CA- D. 1968, Brooklyn, NY) is an acclaimed Modern artist known for her influential paintings, drawings, prints, embroideries, and tapestries. Hugely impacted by her studies and experiences in Paris, Zorach’s work was influenced by bold Fauvist colors and fractured Cubist planes. Her use of expressive, rhythmic abstractions in her art created dynamic works of simplified forms and pure color palettes. In addition to being the first president of the Society of Woman Artists in the 1920’s, Zorach received an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts from Bates College (1964), the silver medal from the San Francisco Legion of Honor (1919), the Logan Medal from the Chicago Arts Institute (1920).
