Lot description
Marc Chagall was born in Belarus in 1887 to Russian-Jewish parents. One of the twentieth century’s most successful artists, Chagall was associated with many major Modern art movements including Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. While Chagall is difficult to tie to a single artistic movement of his time, he is known for having been consistently at the forefront of the art scene, and his mastery of color in particular is undeniable. Characterized by lush colors and harmonious compositions, the themes and subjects in his work reflect the influence of his Eastern European Jewish background. His works often feature haunting and poetic imagery drawn from Russian folklore, as well as bouquets and floating figures.

Illustrated in Chagall 'Lithographs V' by Charles Sorlier, pg. 110. 50 numbered, signed proofs on arches wove paper. 10 APs, signed and numbered in Roman numerals on Japan nacreous paper.
