Lot description
"Femme a' l'oiseau" illustrates two of Chagall most important themes and symbols: his love of the feminine form and the dove of peace.

From the "Douze Contemporains" portfolio, this lithograph was executed in the studios of Daniel Jacomet, published and printed by Editions D'art du Lion in France in 1959. It is from an unnumbered edition of 970 and is accompanied by the original paper folder with the artist's name and title printed on the cover.
Specially selected from a portfolio containing 12 works by important 20th century masters.

Marc Chagall was born in Belarus in 1887 to Russian-Jewish parents. One of the twentieth century’s most successful artists, Chagall was associated with many major Modern art movements including Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism. While Chagall is difficult to tie to a single artistic movement of his time, he is known for having been consistently at the forefront of the art scene, and his mastery of color in particular is undeniable. Characterized by lush colors and harmonious compositions, the themes and subjects in his work reflect the influence of his Eastern European Jewish background. His works often feature haunting and poetic imagery drawn from Russian folklore, as well as bouquets and floating figures.
