Lot description
"Les amis des Espagnoles (Friends of the Spanish)" (1968) is a gelatin silver print, black and white photograph by famed Contemporary African Artist Malick Sidibé. Dimensions: 9.45 x 11.80 inches /24 x 30 cm, unframed and in excellent condition. The wildness of the 1950’s, and the coming of independence in many African countries gave birth to a new generation of photographers who were very involved in the cultural and social life that they recorded. Malick Sidibé, was a pivotal character in this – he was present at all the soirees where the young people learned the new dances coming from Europe and Cuba, and dressed elegantly in Western clothes. From his photos an insouciance and spontaneity emerges: he captured the playful partying, full of laughter and life. The Hasselblad Award was presented to Sidibé 2003 and in 2007 he was awarded the Venice Biennale's Golden Lion Award for lifetime achievement- the first time it has ever been presented to a photographer.
