"Find Little Winter" (2009) is an iconic example of the colorful paintings typically filled with cartoonish female figures in surreal narratives by Japanese artist Maki Hosokawa. This painting depicts two wide-eyed young women dressed in traditional Japanese robes painted in a flat, stylized manor. Here tension and communication are key themes in this painting as one woman holds tightly to her coat, while the other attempts to remove it. This painting conflates historical references, Japanese POP culture, and contemporary social interactions between women in the present age. Maki Hosokawa was born in Osaka, Japan in 1980 into the generation raised on manga, anime and the Japanese street-art of the early 1990’s. These influences are certainly seen in Maki’s colorful and paintings and cartoonish, absurd figures. But looking closer, we can see references unusual for a young artist in Japan. Maki Hosokawa often revisits classical works from the Impressionist, Renaissance and Dutch masters as well as taking cues from more local Japanese histories. Maki Hosokawa is represented and well collected throughout Japan and winner of the GEISAI #6 Award by Takashi Murakami’s art promotion company KaiKai KiKi. Her work is highly sought after on the primary and secondary markets.
