Lot description
"A Dancing Princess" (2009) is a stunning example of the colorful figurative paintings by young Japanese artist Maki Hosokawa, whose work is known to conflate historical themes, Japanese POP culture and contemporary issues. She is know to reference unusual sources for a young artist in Japan, especially art from the Impressionist, Renaissance and Dutch masters. This painting clearly references the iconic ballerina paintings by Degas in subject matter, color and painterly style. "A Dancing Princess" measures approximately inches 45.85 x 23.75 inches (116.7 x 60.30 cm), is unframed and in excellent condition.

Maki Hosokawa was born in Osaka, Japan in 1980 into the generation raised on manga, anime and the Japanese street-art of the early 1990’s. Maki Hosokawa is represented and well collected throughout Japan and winner of the GEISAI #6 Award by Takashi Murakami’s art promotion company KaiKai KiKi. Her work is highly sought after on the primary and secondary markets.
