Lucian Grigorescu, a Romanian painter, studied at the Fine Art school in Bucharest (1912-1915) and later at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome (1920). He received a scholarship in Paris and from there he travelled to Cassis, in the south of France, where he remained until 1939. Throughout this period he was also exhibiting in Bucharest, at the Official Salon, and with the artistic groups Tinerimea Artistica (the Young Artists), Grupul Nostru (Our Group) and Arta. Grigorescu was initially influenced by the Impressionists but from 1925 his works began to demonstrate the influence of artists such as Derain and Cezanne. His landscapes show vitality through their tones and brushstrokes.
