Lot description
Hond & Kat III is an iconic work by the Dutch artist Lucebert. It is oil on canvas and is signed, dated and titled verso. It shows the artist's celebrated use of expressionistic colour and composition.

Born Lubertus Jacobus Swaanswijk in 1924, Lucebert was one of the preeminent Dutch artists of the 20th century. His work is most closely aligned to the COBRA movement (1948-1951) with which he was associated both as a poet and later as an artist. His work is characterized by a freedom and fantasy which also has links to Surrealism and Art Brut and reflects his lifelong obsession with mankind and the human condition. His work is highly figurative and expressionistic both in colour and his handling of paint.
As a poet Lucebert belonged to the Dutch literary movement De Vijftigers which was greatly influenced by the European avant-garde. His poetry laid the foundations for revolutionary innovation in Dutch poetry.

Lucebert's work is included in the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Guggenheim Foundation, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Musees de Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Gent, Stockholm, Anvers, Munich; National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin; Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Museo de Belles Artes, Mexico City.
