Lot description
"A composition for Mondrian" (2002) is an important and dynamic silkscreen print in colors by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Liu Ye (China, b. 1964). This print is from and edition of 62, measuries 22.05 x 28.75 inches (56 x 73 cm) and is in excellent condition. Liu Ye is famous for his figurative works that appropriate the themes and colors of Pop Art to create innocent, surreal narratives. This piece belongs to Liu's famous 'Modrian' series of paintings and prints, with a stylized putti standing in front of an abstract painting by Piet Modrian. The artist's works are visual metaphors for the younger generations in China who are becoming aware and greatly influenced by Western art and history.

Liu Ye (China, b. 1964) is internationally collected for his paintings, works on paper and prints. He graduated from the Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts from the Mural Painting Department, and later earned a Masters of Fine Arts from Hochschule der Kunst in Berlin Germany. In 1998 he was an Artist in Residence, at Rijksacademie, Amsterdam. He is presented by top galleries in the East and West, including the prestigious gallery Sperone Westwater, NY where his most recent solo show was held in 2009. Notable Solo Museum Exhibitions include "Liu Ye" , Kunstmuseum Bern, Switzerland in 2007. Notable Group Museum exhibitions include "CHINAMANIA," ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, Ishøj, Denmark; “Metropolis Now! A Selection of Chinese Contemporary Art,” Meridian International Center, White-Meyer House (Cafritz Galleries), Washington DC; "Facing China – The Fu Ruide Collection,” Akureyri Municipal Art Museum, Akureyri, Iceland and “7 Shanghai Biennale,” Shanghai Art Museum, Shanghai, China all held 2009 to present. Importantly, his first two commercial gallery solo exhibitions in 1993 and 1995 were both held at Gallery Taube, Berlin.
