Lot description
"A composition for Mondrian" is a major silkscreen print by famed Chinese Contemporary artist Liu Ye (China, b. 1964). Liu Ye is famous for his figurative works that appropriate the themes and colors of Pop Art to create innocent, surreal narratives. This piece belongs to Liu's famous 'Modrian' series of paintings and prints, with a stylized putti standing in front of an abstract painting by Piet Modrian. This scene is depicted as a museum setting, yet the entire room is painted a glowing yellow, lit from off to the side. The figure, part of a traditional still-life setting, playfully comes to life as if searching for something off in the distance through his viewfinder. The artist's works are metaphors related to the younger generation in China becoming aware and inspired by the Western course of art and art history, and also remaining proud of their own traditional culture and art. This print is edition of 62, measuring 22.05 x 28.74 inches (56 x 73 cm) and is in excellent condition.

Liu Ye (China, b. 1964) is internationally collected for his paintings, works on paper and prints.
