"Sleeping Man" is a stunning hand-painted porcelain sculpture in the round that depicts a nude, sleeping man covered in a blanket of rose petals, with roses in yellow, pink and lavender in full bloom growing around and upon this peaceful slumbering figure in repose. "Sleeping Man" is the work of mixed media, Chinese Contemporary artist Liu Jin, most famous for his large-scale color photographs and sculptures. This work cleverly references Western art, specifically famous German Meissen porcelain from the 18th century, as well as Classical Greco-Roman marble sculpture. The lack of reference to the traditional styles of Chinese porcelain is intentional and underscores Liu Jin's ongoing exploration of the influence of the West on his own work, and also as a vehicle for exploring issues of self-identity and traditional gender roles in China itself.

One would expect the gender of a figure in such a romantic and effete context here to be female. However, Liu Jin's "Sleeping Beauty" is a man, turning modern-day cultural expectation and ideas of gender roles upside-down. "Sleeping Man" is a brilliant example of the important, clever and alluring work by Liu Jin, that has made him one of the most important artists of his 1970's generation.

Liu Jin has exhibited in countless Museum and Gallery exhibitions world wide including the seminal travelling exhibition 2006: "Ruins- An Exhibition Of New Video And Photography From China", held at The Institute of Visual Arts at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, US; The China International Gallery Exploren (CIGE); and the prestigious F2 Gallery, Beijing. In 2004 the artist was part of another important US Museum exhibition: "Over One Billion Served: Conceptual Photography From The People’s Republic Of China", The Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, U.S.. Additional select Museum exhibitions for the artist include "Gegenwartskunst aus der Sammlung Sigg Kunstmuseum," Bern; The Trevi Flash Art Museum, Italy; The Xuzhou Museum, Xuzhou, China; The Beijing Design Museum, Beijing, China amongst others. The artist was born in 1971 in China and in 1995 Graduated from the Jiangsu Xuzhou Engineering Institute (Arts & Crafts Department). The artist lives and works in China.
