Lot description
"Hiding in the City No. 89- Forbidden City" (2010) is one of the most sought-after and exciting conceptual color photographs by internationally acclaimed Chinese photographer Liu Bolin (Chinese, b. 1973). Every photograph in Bolin's "Hiding in the City Series" is a clever self-portrait, and here the artist is literally painted 'away' in such a manner that he surrenders his ego and sense of self-identity here to the larger history and cultural fabric of "China" itself, standing still in the revered "Hall of Supreme Harmony" in front of an ancient temple in the Forbidden City. This image is sold-out at this size on the primary market and is one of his most sought-after images from the series. This edition belongs to the formal edition of 8 printed at the largest dimensions published, unframed: 39.4 x 59 inches (100cm x 150 cm). The photograph has never been framed, is in perfect condition, and comes with all relevant paperwork and the formal certificate of authenticity from the studio of the artist.

The artist received his B.A. from Shandong University of Arts in Jinan, China in 1995 and his M.F.A. from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, China in 2001. Liu Bolin's "Hiding in the City" photographs have been the subject of numerous Museum, Fine Art Fair and solo gallery exhibitions from 2008 to present, in the US, Europe and Asia, and the artist is represented by top galleries world-wide. The large format editions like this piece are the most sought-after, and rarely come to market. The "Hiding in the City" Series was most recently the subject of the traveling museum and gallery exhibition in 2011-12: “The Invisible Man,” Lake Vänern Museet, Lidköping, Sweden; “The Invisible Man,” Eli Klein Fine Art, New York, NY; "The Invisible Man," Fotografiska Museet, Stockholm, Sweden, and in 2012 “The Invisible Man,” Ekaterina Cultural Foundation, Moscow, Russia. In the same year 2011 the artist had a solo show in France: "Liu Bolin" at Galerie Paris-Beijing. Solo exhibitions in 2012 include: “Lost in Art,” Eli Klein Fine Art, New York, NY; "Liu Bolin," The Longyear Museum of Anthropology, Colgate University, Hamilton, NY and "Liu Bolin," California State University Northridge Art Galleries, Northridge, CA amongst others. Liu Bolin currently lives and works in Beijing, China.
