"Extreme Illusion: Self Portrait" (2008) is a tour-de-force work by famed Chinese artist Liu Baomin. Painted in his iconic, fractured hyper-real manner, this work intentionally creates the illusion that the artist is being viewed through faceted glass or a sheet of rain. His singular manner of embracing the complexities of shape, light, and color to push spatial, visual and conceptual boundaries make the world of Baomin one where extreme reality and extreme fantasy co-exist. Liu's unique manner of manipulating the viewer’s perceptions of reality takes painstaking amounts of time, with each work created over several months, thus he produces only several paintings a year. This work is unframed and in excellent condition.

This world of Liu Baomin (China, B. 1968) is one where reality and fantasy co-exist, most notably in his "Extreme Illusion" Series of hyper-realist figurative oil paintings that launched the artist's career onto the international art scene, with paintings from the Series setting impressive international auction records and selling out on the primary market. Liu Baomin’s paintings have been the subject of numerous Museum exhibitions in Asia and Europe including from 2012-2007 including Zhuzao Art Museum (China), Castle Art Museum (Tours, France), and Normal Art Museum (China). The artist lives and works in Beijing, China.
