Lot description
Li Song (李松) was born in the city of Mu Ling in China’s northern most province Helongjiang and in 1981 moved to Harbin to study painting. This region of the country has much Russian influence and was far removed from the Contemporary art scene starting to explode at the time. In 1993, Li Song moved to the Yuanmingyuan area of Beijing. Here he was inspired to utilize his well honed skills in European classical realist style to create intimate portraits of singular, disconnected objects or tableaus. This work measures 24 x 28 inches and comes framed in excellent condition.

In his 2004 solo exhibition “Brick” at the Yan Huang Museum in Beijing, Li Song shown his ability to successfully capture the life and spirit of even objects as inanimate as a worn, chipped block. There is a surprising range of color and textures extracted from the objects seemingly placed carelessly on a creased and wrinkled cloth background. Art critic Yang Wei says “Li Song [is able to] to bypass the College of formality,… and yet retain the classical realist technique to resurrect the contemporary art scene.”

Li Song is widely collected in China as well as internationally. His notable exhibits include the aforementioned "Brick", Yan Huang Museum, Beijing, April 2004; Goedhuis Contemporary Gallery, New York, March 2005; "Body Warmth: Hans Christian Andersen's 200th Anniversary", China Contemporary Exhibition, 2005; The Art Museum of the China Millennium, Beijing; and North Jutland Museum of Art, Aalborg, Denmark.
