Lot description
"A Deep Thought" (2010) is a tour-de-force by Chinese Contemporary multi-media artist, Li Qing. This stunning three-dimensional conceptual sculpture clearly depicts visage of Buddha, created through a painstaking process of attaching hundreds of faceted beads to filament at specific heights within a Plexiglas boxed frame. This work belongs to a select series of three-dimensional works mostly of skeletons and Buddhist themes by Li. This is the only Buddha Buddha in the group. Conceptually, the artist decided to experiment with the idea of “3-D space”, to experiment with the duality of the permanence of Buddha as experienced in paintings and sculptures versus the feeling of the ethereal and “nothingness” that exists in his unique manner of using space and materials.

Li Qing received his formal training is fashion and design in 1993 when he graduated from the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, China. Select Gallery and Museum exhibitions started for Li in the late 1990is in Europe and Asia, such as 1997: "Black Clothes", Chinese Clothing Original Design Studio, Paris, France and 2001: "Black Clothes Fashion Show:, U.S. Embassy, China. Performance works took place in Germany in 2002 and a design show of his work at The Louvre Museum, Paris France. The artist has exhibited his art work at a number of top Asian Galleries, most recently in 2010: "You’re looking at art?", Yang Gallery Beijing, China.
