This irreverent black-and-white portrait of a young nude woman with Pippi Longstocking-style braids was selected as the cover image for the Chronicle Books coffee table collection, "NERVE/The New Nude," which featured other photographs by Leslie Lyons, as well as work by David Levinthal, Nan Goldin, Elinor Carucci, Andres Serrano and other fine art photographers.

Contemporary American photographer Leslie Lyons (b. 1966) specializes in portraiture that strongly situates individual identity in the context of popular culture. Lyons has photographed for the New York Times, Vibe, and Life Magazine, among other publications. Her work has been exhibited at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE (2012-13); Dacia Gallery, New York, NY (2012); Land of Tomorrow Gallery, Louisville, KY (2011-12); Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, New Orleans, LA (2011); and Rosenwald-Wolf Gallery, Philadelphia, PA (2011). In 2009, the Art Directors Club in New York City held a solo show of her photographs entitled “INSTANT MESSAGING: an analogue collection,” which featured eighteen life-size mounted portraits as well as 75 Polaroids. In 2010, the 21c Museum, Louisville, KY included the portraits from the INSTANT MESSAGING series in a group show that also featured works by Kara Walker, Chuck Close, and Mickalene Thomas.
