Lot description
Camels were a very important subject in Rivers' career. Rivers revisited the subject consistently from the very early 60's through the 90's.

Painter and sculptor Larry Rivers (1923-2002) combined different influences, genres, and mediums, becoming one of the first artists to successfully blend abstract and figurative styles. Born in the Bronx, NY, Rivers studied at the Hans Hofmann School from 1947 to 1948 and graduated from New York University in 1951. Inspired by Abstract Expressionism and the active painting techniques of Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, Rivers applied a similar approach to Pop culture images and controversial topics of sex and politics. In 1965, The Rose Art Museum, Waltham, MA organized the first conclusive retrospective of his work, which toured the US. Since then, Rivers’ work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions throughout the world, including recent shows at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York, NY (2012); Guild Hall, East Hampton, NY (2008); Marlborough Gallery, New York, NY (2005); and a major retrospective organized by The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (2002).
