Larry Clark (b. 1943) is an influential American filmmaker and photographer whose best-known work takes illicit underage activities and youth subcultures as its subject. After studying at the Layton School of Art, Milwaukee, WI, Clark was drafted to serve in Vietnam. He came to prominence as an artist in 1971 with his book “Tulsa,” which featured intimate photographs of his amphetamine-using hometown friends. Later series would include “Teenage Lust” (1983); “The Perfect Childhood” (1992); and “Skaters” (1992-95), all of which focused on marginalized and sometimes criminal youths in the Midwest and in New York City. In 1993, Clark directed Chris Isaak’s music video for the song “Solitary Man,” an experience which led him to filmmaking. In collaboration with the writer Harmony Korine, Clark wrote the screenplay for “Kids” (1995), his provocative and critically acclaimed feature film debut. As a photographer, Clark has had solo exhibitions at Simon Lee Gallery, London England; the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France; Luhring Augustine, New York, NY; the Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris, France; and the Fotografiska Museet i Moderna Museet, Stockholm, Sweden, among many others. He lives and works in New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA.
