Lot description
‘Beyond the Visible’ is an epoxy resin and acrylic color painting which captures Kim Hyun Sik’s characteristic approach to figurative works. Here, he creates a vivid composition filled with softened textures and an ephemeral elegance, shifting from a sense of realism to the intangible. Kim Hyun Sik captures everything from the sheen of light reflecting off her head, to the individual strands of hair twisting down her neck, playing her softened silhouette against the sharper details rendered by his exacting hand.

Known for his elusive figurative paintings, Korean artist Kim Hyun Sik creates realistic portraiture that depicts women from the back, removing any sense of identity from the subject and casting a sense of unknown mystery over the composition. His intention is to make one see beyond the surface, past the reflective glare caused by the epoxy resin, to see significance through introspection. Employing epoxy resin and acrylic color as his preferred medium, the artist builds up a smooth surface which manipulates the eye’s perception in order to constantly draw the viewer deeper into his work. The artist has exhibited at numerous venues including SeJong Museum (Seoul, Korea), Ming Art Center (Beijing, China), and Busan Museum of Art (Busan, Korea), among others.
