Lot description
Rare to auction this sculptural multiple is artfully displayed on a wooden shelf and is in excellent condition. Drawing on her fascination with the human body, Kiki Smith created this mixed media work depicting the facial muscles of her subject. The transparency of the glass provides an interesting parallel to the transparency of an x-ray. As is often the case in Smith's work, the proportions of the facial structure and rendering of musculature are presented in an almost minimalistic and child-like manner.

Kiki Smith (B. 1954, Nuremberg, Germany) is a contemporary American artist who specializes in sculpture but also works in printmaking, paintings, drawings, and photography. Renowned as one of the most influential feminist artists, Smith often explores themes of social issues such as AIDS, gender, domestic violence, and the relationship between art and eroticism. Her work often transcends classification, often weaving elements of storytelling and narrations into the complex relationships of life, death, and resurrection she depicts in her art. Smith has received numerous awards in her lifetime including the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture in 2000, the 50th Edward MacDowell Medal from the MacDowell Colony in 2009, and has participated numerous times in the Whitney Biennial.

Smith's work is in numerous prominent museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Walker Art Center, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Smith lives and works in New York City.
